The use of an address for shipping purposes
    05/23/2008

I have been leasing a home, for 2 years now, and have recently been informed that the owner, who has been residing at another address since, has been making regular business shipments via Federal Express, with my address shown on the shipping label. Is this legal for him to do, since I have no invovlvement, whatsoever, with him personally, or proffessionally, and if not, what course of action would you recommend?

    Sincerely,

    Laurie Scotti

I would write him a letter and get a delivery receipt and tell him you are uncomfortable with him using your address as his return address and requesting that he stop the practice. If he is doing something illegal guess where the Police will show up?

The letter doesn't have to be confrontational or unpleasant - you just would prefer he not use your address as his address.

Then I would see what he does, come back and report and see what the next step would be - according to, perhaps, State law.

Also are you sure,? Who told you and how did you find out ?

It may be an issue of laziness, he may have a Fed Express account listed at that address and instead of merely changing that address he has just left it.

Depends on what kind of "business" shipments this man has been making. If you have lived there for 2 years but he owns the property, he had plenty of time to change his address on his Federal Express account. If you feel uncomfortable about this, do write him a short note about it. I am sure Federal Express would not be happy with him using a wrong address for business purposes if something shipped happened to have contraband contents in it.
