I can get a Craftsman 2001 LT 1000 tractor with no engine and I have a 1998 (I think)Craftsman 14 1/2 hp OHV I/C Gold tractor with a bad trans. Can I put the 1998 engine into the 2001 tractor?

Yes, and if they are both briggs the pto pulley should work without modifications.
