We have a circuit breaker box installed in 1977. Breakers are not at the corner hardware store. We need a 50 amp breaker, the hot tub requires 6/2 with ground wire. My question is: Are two 30 amp breakers bolted together equal to 60 amps? If they are can that be used for the hot tub? Keep in mind I know nothing about this subject, it just seems to make sense to me, we are being told that we should not hook our tub up to this box, because we might use everything in the house at once which would throw the main switch.

Absolutely NOT! You need to get a 60 Amp Breaker. Is the hot tub a 240 VAC or a 120/240 VAC piece of equipment? Are you sure that the hot tub only requires 6/2 AWG.

The hot tub is 220 volt 50 amp, I could not find anything in the spa material about 240 VAC or a 120/240 Vac

How many wires are to be run to the tub?

2 hots, 1 neutral and ground. The 2 hots and ground are mandatory.

A Hot tub box for 240 usually requires all of the above because there is a 120 V convience outlet on the hot tub box.

Even if the tub is a straight 240v load, a neutral is needed at the disconnect if that is where the GFI is located. This means 6/3 to the disconnect.

The reason you cannot find 240 is because your instructions are out of date.

The Voltages of 110 and 220 are gone. Current levels are 120 and 240. Wiring configurations are the same.
