How hard is it to replace a toilet... should we just replace the tank if possible?
How can we plug the hole while we are replacing it? Can we use a rag type thing or do we need to buy a cap.

Just keep in mind that although from a technical standpoint changing a toilet is easy (it's not very complicated; just two bolts and a wax ring), in reality you may find it quite hard: a "porcelain throne" can be VERY heavy. In fact, dealing with the weight of the toilet is often the hardest part of the job. So if your back is not in good shape, make sure you have someone to help you.

Well the reason we are looking at replacing the toilet is because we bought the house on Foreclosure... (for a reason) some things are really bad. This bathroom is the 3rd so we have just been avoiding it, but now we want a shower and it's the only one that has one and can have one. The toilet is just discusting... there is really no explanation. The tank is also cracked and will probably start leaking when we turn the water on. I can clean the bowl, but the tank is really just grose. The vanity and sink is a whole nother story in itself.

OK Tiffany,
You are now faced with options. (1) You can clean upthe tank and caulk the crack from the inside with epoxy, (2) Change out the tank,( for this I'll need to know how many tank bolts are in the old tank. They're located next to the flapper. Or (3) you can pull and replace the entire toilet. 1 being the easiest, to a little harder or 3 being the most difficult. Your choice. Cheers, Tom
I had the same problem a few apartments ago.. toilet tank was cracked and the landlord "fixed it with caulk".. still managed to leak... I got the OK to replace it so I bought 1 at home depot for $60 on sale it was a 2 piece toilet.. let me tell you.. I never never expected the old one to weigh as much as it did and I pulled a muscle in my back lifting it out of the bathroom.. seperate the old in 2 pieces... save your HUSBANDS back... just remember to turn of the water line and dry all the water in the old tank before separating and note there still wiil be some water in the bowl unit IF you replace the bottom so be careful and finally... LET THAT WAX RING GET TO ROOM TEMP before installing... a cold wax ring is not your friend trust me...

And make sure to "bevel" the wax ring OUTWARD (i.e. squash it a bit in such a way that when placed on the flange, the inner portion of the ring will be thinner from top to bottom, and the outside will be thicker from top to bottom). Otherwise, the ring may expand (or just "ooze") inward, blocking the toilet's discharge.Quote:

Do not put a rag in the line it could fall into the line and you will have to snake it out just to get the rag back out... to replace your toilet here is how to do it...Quote:
