I have a four year old kenmore elite washing machine that will not agitate or spin and only makes a loud humming/grinding noise. It sounds a s if the mottor is running, yet is diengaged from whatever turns the agitator.

Replace the coupler. Cost about $35.00. It is located between the motor and transmission. This will solve your problem. Easy to fix. About 30 minutes
