    Flaky mouse
My (MS) wireless mouse began acting flaky last week, in that it wouldn't respond to my "clicks" properly. Sometimes it required the simultaneous pressing of both sides of the mouse in order to activate my desktop icons. Some times after clicking on a desktop icon, the mouse would not respond immediately, but would respond after a few seconds. Sometimes it just won't respond... period.

I ran both Adaware and Spybot to clean out obvious malware which didn't seem to help. I changed the batteries in my wireless mouse which didn't help. I shut down my computer and then restarted, but that didn't help. My anti-virus program is AVG 8.0 and is updated every other day.

My operating system is Windows XP. I updated to Service Pack 3 a few days ago and following that update my mouse worked perfectly. I thought the problem with my mouse was solved. Now, after some days have passed, my mouse is again acting flaky.

Should I return to a conventional "wired" mouse set-up? Is there another area left to be diagnosed? What gives?

    Additional things to try:
    • Clean optical sensor or ball/rollers.
    • Clean send and receive sensors if mouse is infrared type.
    • If the mouse is radio frequency type and operates at a frequency of 2.4 GHz., there could be many sources of interference that could be impacting the performance: microwaves, cordless phones, other wireless devices, etc.
    • Most Microsoft mice have a three year warranty. If it's in warranty send it back.

My personal belief is that some things best remain corded; mouse and keyboard are two of those things.

The problem with the mouse was resolved a couple of months ago when I updated to a new PC and trashed my wireless mouse for a "wired" mouse. Thanks.
