Identical twins just "happen", there is no known reason and it is spontaneous. Fraternal twins are created when the ovaries release more than one egg. That happens naturally sometimes and can also be forced by taking fertility drugs. A doctor would not give you fertility drugs just because you want twins. Also with fertility drugs, there are major risks and you may get more than twins.

BTW, it doesn't matter that twins run in your husbands family as far as you're concerned. The mother is the only one responsible for making twins, the father has nothing to do with it besides giving the sperm to fertilize the egg or eggs. Now, if you had baby girls, then your husbands family traits would matter to them, because it would get passed on to them. But for you, it makes no difference.

Come to think of it, I did hear a story about an African tribe that has a high twin birth rate. Their diet is high in yams/sweet potatoes. There is something about sweet potatoes and fertility, so you could try eating lots of them... this would be for fraternal twins I would assume.

The only way to GUARANTEE twins that I know of is to go with IVF.

Talk to your doctor about the possibility of fertility drugs, but generally they won't prescribe them unless you are having difficulty conceiving, because there ARE side effects that go with them.

If you just want twins because it would be "fun" or "cute", I doubt your doctor will prescribe anything of the sort.

If you want twins because you are either having difficulty conceiving or because you have a family history of difficult pregnancies and only want to go through pregnancy once because of it--then you may have valid medical reason for pursuing twins.

Otherwise--be happy when you conceive ONE child. There are thousands of couples out there who can not conceive at all.
