I'm looking for the title of a movie B/W about an immigrant family possibly Swedish or Norwegian. They have difficulty with money.

Each Friday the mother takes the various earnings of the family members and adds up the income and the outgoings for the family and declares that this week they have enough in the tin and do not have to go to the bank this week, and it is "good"

Their daughter writes a story of the family history and about their day to day life in America, the mother has always told the daughter that they have a bank account and is only found out, when the daughters cheque for the advance payment for the book arrives and she ask that it be put into the bank. Only to be told they have never had a bank account at all.

Could it be either The Emigrants (1971) or its sequel, The New Land (1972)? These were color films, though.
