I have been served Lis Pendens papers. How do I ask for more time from the courts? I was told you can go to the court house and hand them a piece of paper saying " I need more time to negotiate with the banks"? Who do I file with and is that what I write?

Welcome to AMHD. Have you read the Lis Pendens papers? Who filed? Why do you need more time? Ordinarily, a 'notice of lis pendens' is notice 'to the world' that your real property (land) is subject to a claim that is being handled in court. Have you been sued?

As George said a lis pendens is the preliminary step in securing a creditor's interest in a property. Its generally used in foreclosures.

Since it's the first, there are several more steps to take. The next step depends on what the suit is about. But it usually means a hearing and is usually preceded by a summons. When you get the summons it should include a court date, so that should give you a better idea of how much time you have.

You should continue to negotiate with the entity who filed the suit.

Whatever you do, READ the paperwork. Even if you don't understand everything, there are dates that are critical to your situation. If you have to ask the question, you need an attorney to help you sort out your next step. (No, I don't hire an attorney for every little argument I get into, but this certainly calls for one.)

I am not sure where your property is situated and also the nature of lis. If it is in Indian court either you appear personally or through your counsel and seek time giving out reasons. You will be given reasonable time even on your oral request if you are personally present.
