    100 amp to 200amp
    I want to run a 100 amp panel in to my garage from my 200 amp panel in my basement what size wire do ineed. And do I need a breaker in boat panels or just the panel in garage

    Mike, can you be a little more detailed, please!

    For example, there are enormous differences in code and mechanics if the garage is a separate building rather than an attached.

    Why are you pulling 100 amps. Have you calculated the anticipated loads in the garage?

    What is the distance from the panel to the garage? Are you planning on an above ground run or underground.

    Beyond that, my crystal ball is almost as foggy as I am. :)

    Don is correct we do need more input. But I will give you two senerio's with very very limited information:
    1. Detached garage (Not considering voltage drop)= #3 Copper or #1 Alum. Note: if your area doesn't stock these wire sizes, then you will have to upgrade to a larger size
    2. Attached garage. Based on NEC T.310.15(B)(6)= #2 Alum, or #4 copper
    3. Attached garage= No Main breaker needed in sub panel; 100 amp breaker needed in main
    4. Detached garage=Install a 100A (or 125A) main breaker panel (Forget all the politics) in detached garage; Install a 100A breaker in main panel
    Note: This is very limited information

    The garage is attached to house and I am putting the wire above the ground run and the distance is about 50 feet . I am mainly putting outlets and lighting in garage but I am making up stairs amaster bed and bath will hot tub on a deck out side of the bed room

    Based on your information, you can run a #2SER with grounding conductor(alum) or #4SER with grounding conductor (Copper)

    The #4 copper SER comes: 4-4-4-6 (Four conductors)
    The #2Alum SER comes 2-2-2-4 (four conductors)

    What route are you planning for your wire? Example: Inside the walls etc etc...
