I am attempting to install a toilet in the upstairs hall bathroom.

I have installed a tile floor. What clearance does the flange that goes directly into the drain pipe need to be? Does it sit directly on the floor?

I also have a metal piece that mimics the flange top that the toilet screws into, when I place the flange at the proper height above thbe floor then should I add the metal piece toh elp secute the toilet?

The simpler you can describe this the better off I will eventually be.

Any chance of a picture? I think that metal pipe you refer to may be a spacer. The finished top surface of the flange should be even with the floor surface or the bottom surface of the flange even with the floor. If you are within this range a regular wax ring should work, get one with the neopreme collar pointing down.

Sounds like you are trying to install a NEW flange to drain pipe... yes? OR is there an old flange and you are trying to install a new flange over old flange... 'cause that is not how it is done!

If new flange, as Ballengerb1 stated, flange needs to sit on top of the tile floor (or if slightly below will be fine, too).

The flange then needs to be secured by drilling through the tile (if mounted on top of tile.. will need 1/4" carbide drill bit and 1/4" plastic anchors (see pic.) to secure flange through tile.

If not on top of tile, plan is still to secure the flange through the floor and into the subfloor under the flange.

Of course, if tile or floor NOT under the flange.. and no way to secure then you can expect to have issues with movement at the toilet.

Worst case, this can be fixed using a mildew resistant ADHESIVE caulking at the toilet base (leave back area open so leak can be revealed if wax gasket seal fails... and let caulking dry at least 24 hours before using toilet).

If old flange and you are tying to raise it to the appropriate height...you want to purchase a flange extension kit (at home supply store)...see pic.

Also, no need for additional metal ring on top of flange if installing new flange... metal ring is usually reserved for repairing flanges gone bad!!
