    Living expense deduction in OPT
Can I deduct expenses like rent, commute and meals, while on OPT in my 2005 tax returns? I graduated from U Maryland in December 2004 and I did my OPT in Boston from Jan01, 2005 to May 31, 2005 . After that I switched to H1 on the same job. I'm filing 1040 (not NR) and I did the same last year because I had been in the US for more than five years. Since January 2005 I have been living with my wife who was F1 student for the whole of 2005 .

    Thanks!

    Amit:

No, you may not claim expenses like rent, commute and meals. However, the move to Boston wold be considered a job change, so you can claim the moving expenses on Form 3903.
