Hello, I just got a new puppy. She's the cutest thing ever. A "yorkie poo". I got her on Sunday, she was doing well for Monday and Tuesday, then Tuesday night she vomited once. I didn't think anything about it that night, but the next day she had real bad diarrhea and stopped eating. I heard about small puppies getting hypoglycemic easy so I gave her some honey and that seemed to perk her back up. She still was having bad diarrhea so I took her to the vet. By the time I got her to the vet and they checked her out, her sugar had bottomed out and she had a seizure. The vet tested her for parvo. The test was negative but she still felt like it was parvo. I can't believe how attached I got to this little girl in just 3 days. I've been crying my eyes out all day. I am a big guy (6' 300#) and I look absolutely ridiculous with this tiny puppy but I don't care. I am so scared that she's not going to make it. Anyone have any words of wisdom on how to deal with this?

Oh honey, I'm so sorry that your puppy's sick. If it is parvo then the best you can do is let the vet treat her, but it's touch and go. I won't sugar coat it, parvo is an extremely terrible disease, and it has a high fatality rate, but her best chance of surviving is with a vets care. If she survives this she will probably be weak for the rest of her life. Google parvo for more information, there is allot of info on this disease and the treatments available, also info on how to raise a pup that has survived parvo.

My baby passed away this morning. I am devistated. I didn't think I could get so attached to her in just a few days. I called the breeder and she wasn't real helpful at first. She didn't want to admit that it could be parvo. I bought my puppy at the flea market from someone who was supposed to be a responsible breeder. Eventually she offered me another pup, but the ones she has are only 2 weeks old right now. I'm just not sure that I can handle going through this again. I told her that another puppy would have to be old enough for 3 sets of shots before I bring her home.

Do not get another puppy from that breeder! Parvo is extremely contagious, if your puppy had it then there is a very good chance that any dog you get from that breeder will also have parvo.

I'm so sorry about your loss, it's not hard to believe that you fell in love with this little life, it shows what a kind caring person you are. I'm so sorry this had to happen.

Let me just advise you a bit about getting another dog. Reputable breeders do not need to go to the flea market in order to sell their pups, in fact, those pups are usually already spoken for before they are even conceived. This is not a breeder, probably owns a puppy mill, please do not go back to her for a puppy. Pet stores also support puppy mills, do not buy a dog from a pet store, please, do not support puppy mills. This is just based on my opinion and allot of research.

Have you considered a puppy adopted from your local SPCA or a no kill animal shelter?

The first thing is to grieve for you loss, if you would like some help finding a reputable breeder in your area, let me know and I'll do some research for you, but I guarantee that the lady you got your puppy from is not a good breeder.

Do not get another puppy period for now. If the puppy had a bowel movement outside, the ground is contaminated for at least 6 months and maybe 10 years. You can do a search here on extensive discussions.

Pick up an older dog up to date on its shots. One of the best sources for dogs with a predictable personality is the rescue dogs. These are dogs that lost their home, but were taken into a foster home to be retrained as necessary and placed in the right home for them. You may find a rescue near you starting at American Kennel Club - Breed Rescue The rescues charge a fee to help cover their expenses, but is much less than the price of a puppy plus all its medical expenses the first year.

Well, I have talked to the lady I got her from. After thinking about it for a few days, I am considering getting another puppy from her. Here's my plan... First of all, I have spent so much already and the only way to somewhat recover that is to take another pup that she has offered me. She has a female that is only 2 weeks old and she said that she will keep her until after her 3rd set of shots. I figure by that point she should be immune to any parvo that may be at my home. The vet never could say for sure that it was parvo, but they treated my pup as if it had it. The parvo test was negative, but she said that was common and she felt that it was. So, what do you think? By 12 or 13 weeks if the new pup is healthy and up to date on shots should I get it? I thought about a rescue but I am just a little skeptical because you never know what issues an older dog may have. (medical, behavior, etc.) Just to clear up the flea market issue... In the area where I live, it is common for some people to take puppies there to sell. My sister bred great danes and usually most of them were sold early, but occasionally she would have 2 or 3 that didn't sell so she took them there and did OK selling them. And, the lady I am getting the pup from has assured me that she won't take the new pup to the flea market. I feel that that is where the other pup got sick from. Just so many people and kids handling them all day long. I really want to get a puppy though as apposed to an older dog because I have an older dog now and he did fine with the puppy, but we tried several times before with older dogs and he didn't do well with them.

First I want to say that I'm very sad for you that your precious baby passed away.

NOW,. I really want you to go back and read what the others have said. There was a reason your vet said that she was still going to treat your puppy for parvo!! Please DO NOT get another pup from the same litter. I hate saying this because I know that all animals deserve to have a loving home, but even if you get one of the healthy ones, he/she could still be susceptible to the parvo from your other dog. (as said above)

You should absolutely wait for a period, even though I know you miss your little pup... but you don't want to have another one die, right?

When the time is right to get a new fur baby, there are soooo many shelters (breed specific) that you can go to and rescue a pup that might just die because no one came to get him. :(

I rescued my dog 1 day before she was going to be put down, ( she is in the vet hosp right now because of a horrible incident, and I can't even rest until she comes home) and she is one of the most loving and loyal dogs out there. Shelter animals are your best bet! They are very smart and they really appreciate it and give their love back to you 10 fold :)

Wrong, wrong, wrong! The shots may not take because the mother's immunity hadn't worn off. Also, puppies that remain with the breeder in the important 6-12 week period often end up social misfits, fearful, separation anxiety, hard to housebreak, etc.

The only good part of your plan is that the puppy may still be at the breeder's contaiminated place in the window it is vulnerable to parvo. Talk to your vet about this.

I just don't know what I am going to do. Now the breeder won't return my call. I am just so upset about all this. First, my puppy died and broke my heart. Now, I'm not sure if I want another puppy. She offered me another and said this one was only 2 weeks old so it would be a while before I would be able to get it. Now, she won't return my call. I can't believe that someone could be so cruel. I'm heartbroken and now I feel like I was taken. I spent over $600 and ended up with nothing. I thought she was going to do the right thing and make it right by at least replacing the pup with a healthy one but now she won't even return my call. How do I trust someone to get another pup from someone else after this? I checked on adopting a rescued dog, but the adoption fee for a small puppy is just as much or more than what I paid a breeder. I wanted a small dog because I had back surgery and now the doctor says I can't lift more than 5 pounds. I figured if I got a puppy at least that would keep me busy. I'm stuck at home all day and the doctor says I probably will never be able to go back to work.

Oh sweetie, I'm so sorry about your loss.

It's not surprising that the "breeder" isn't returning your calls, I told you before, I don't believe that she is a reputable breeder at all.

Have you considered taking her to small claims court, at least you can get your money back. If she is a reputable breeder than a refund for a puppy that died shouldn't be a problem, especially if she cares at all about her reputation.

Don't give up.

I think I am going to talk to the flea market where she sells her puppies. I have been reading a lot about parvo and if my puppy had parvo, most likely there will be others from there with it. I am going to tell the management there about it and tell them that they need to stop the sale of all puppies there. If they continue to let people sell them they should be held liable. Maybe the best way to get this lady's attention is to put a dent in her business.

She should not be selling puppies period, if one puppy had parvo then the odds are that all of her pups have parvo, it's highly contagious and very often fatal. I still don't think you should even take a puppy from her, you are just setting yourself up for heartache again.

I know it hurts and I know that you miss her, but you have to think clearly now, you don't want to go through this twice.

I'm so sorry that all of this has gone the way it has for you honey, and also very sorry to hear about your back injury as well. It makes me so angry that there are breeders out there that do this strictly for profit.

Try and Google info about breeders and their responsibilities and YOUR rights, and definitely look into getting compensation for your loss. I assume that you are on a limited budget because of your injury also. As said above, you should look into taking this woman to small claims court, and also check out the by-laws in your area.

Also do some research as to exactly how long you need to wait before getting another pup because of the parvo. It is very contagious as said before. I don't know where you live or what shelter that you went to, but it really shouldn't cost you more than what you oringinally paid for sure! If they are a reputable shelter, they will only charge you for the cost of taking care of an animal, and they also make sure all pets are healthy, spayed or neutered, and up to date on all shots before they are adopted out.
