Are you a United States citizen?
If you are not a US citizen you need a passport to get INTO the US; after that you can travel to any state. For example, if you are coming from Spain to New York, you need a passport when you arrive, but you can travel from New York to Hawaii (or any other state) without your passport (it is a good ID though).
If you are a US citizen, you can travel to any state without a passport.
If you live here already, you do not need one from state to state, but I can tell you for sure that if you go on a cruise even in the U.S you will need one. I did.

Between Canada and the US at land crossings (by car) a passport is not needed but if you fly (in either direction) yes you need a passport.
