Alternate to conventional out-door cleanout cover?
I don't seem to have an outside clean out for my sewer lateral. From where the sewer line exits the house from the basement to City sewer line across the street there is no identifiable cover. We are in a 130 yr old duplex. The dwelling on the other side has the square cover in the brick side walk in front, but we have none. I lifted bricks over where our lateral is, in the corresponding location of where the other side of the duplex is. The old bricks have never been disturbed. One thing we have that the other side does not, is a ""floor" drain for the brick walk that raps around the front corner of our house. This drain should be right over the lateral. Could this have a double use as drain and clean-out?

I don't think the drain could also be a clean out. Could you take a picture of it and send it to us? Regards, Tom

Here are some picuturs of the drain, of which I hope is also the clean out. You might be able to see by the view from which I took one of the pix that I would be standing with the lateral soil pipe beneath me. Then beyond the fence is where I was looking under the bricks for the vent/clean out, but did not find anything. You can see some leaves at the bottom of the drain. However, it is clear and works.

What you have shown me is a garden drain and I'm not too sure it's even connected to the city sewer. In my area it's illegal to connect anything to the city unless it's gray water or sewage. Most garden drains simply run out to a dry well or drain to a ditch. This is not a cleanout. Regards, Tom

Just to be sure it isn't your missing clean out with a missing cover, fill up a bath tub in the house and then have someone drain the tub while you watch and listen at the open pipe.
