Shady Landlord stealing money, do I have a chance?
I have been living in the same apartment for almost 4 years now. I have been through a lot. A couple of times, I lost my job. The landlord worked with me. I had a relative lend me the money that I owed. This caught me up. It was sent last June, the landlord says they did not get it. It was sent through fedex and it was a cashier's check. They have been traced back to the landlord. The landlord, the lady in the office claims she knows nothing of it and is telling me I need to pay more money to get caught up. I have been paying extra money since I began working full time which has been over a year now. I have had several problems with them. I have had mail stolen, I reported it to the police and the landlord, they did nothing. Someone stole the electric meter off the side of the building, I had to pay to replace the meter. They have no emergency number, I guess that doesn't really matter but they care not about anything except the money and I just want to know what I can do. I cannot afford to move. I just spent all of my saved money to have surgery. I don't think I can take living here much longer... I don't know what to do. Someone took the money... someone knows what is going on and I am not stupid and I should not have to live like this... please help me if you can.

For the rent, refuse, tell them to take you to court and you will provide the judge the evidence that they received the casheirs check, Also with the check receipt, the bank can even prove what bank account the money went to.

So I guess if things are this bad, why not just move ?

Having sent it Fedex was a good move. There is no way they can deny they got it. Being a cashier's check also was a good move. Contact whoever lent you this money and see if they can get Fedex to tell them who signed for the envelope and have them forward a copy of the proof of delivery to them. The same with the cashier's check. See if they can get a copy of the cashed check. Tell the landlord you owe them nothing as this money has already been paid to them. Surprised that someone could steal an electric meter as the electric company has specially trained people to change out meters. If not done properly the thing can explode in your face. First time I heard of a meter being stolen. As far as mail is concerned, just don't have anything sent to your home address. Get a box at the post office to stop this from happening ever again. As far as an emergency number - contact your local building dept and see if this is legal or illegal not to have an emergency contact number.
