    Plumbing vent
Is a "soil stack" and a "plumbing vent" the same thing?

Yes and no! They are the same pipe that perform different functions The terms are Vent Stack and Stack Vent.
Stack Vent = The pipe that runs from the house sewer main up to the uppermost fixture that's discharging into it. (This would be your "soil stack")
Vent Stack = The same pipe above the uppermost fixture that goes out the roof as a vent.
And now you know. Regards, Tom
