"I want a boyfriend".. I think this is the key to your questions. You want a relationship, and he is convenient. He is someone safe that you are familiar with and couple with the fact that he isn't technically available it can be very maddening and intoxicating. We all want what we can't have (ie: he has a girlfriend).
