    Paid for incorrect tax preparation
I got my taxes prepared from a local tax preparer. The prices were reasonable but I was not convinced the way he did it. As such, I came back and did some research myself that included posting question on askmehelpdesk.com that proved very helpful.
As a result, I found out that I might be able to save good amount of money if I file my taxes later this year based on some publication. I went back to the local tax preparer and showed him the publication. He agreed that I was right.
My question here is: I paid the money but he filed it wrong. What can I do in this case?

If you have filed it wrong, you can file amended tax return Form 1040X. It you made error is filing as nonresident instead of resident, then you must also attach properly done tax return.

    Hi Mukat,
I did not file it wrong. Rather I filed an extension. My question is what action I can take against the local tax preparer who did the wrong paperwork for me and also charged me money?

What do you do with any service provider who does shoddy work? The good news is that you haven't been damaged in any way. You can ask him to refund some of your money back, but really all you can do is complain to the Better Business Bureau and never use this guy again.

You should ask the preparer to correct it for you free of charge. If he corrects it and files the return correctly, then you really don't have a problem. You will then have received what you paid for. If he will not correct it, he should refund you the fee.

There perparer did not do it wrong? He merely could have done it better. They should do all of the corrections without charging you extra.

    Agree to all above.

The ethical tax preparer stands by his/her work, and corrects his/her errors at NO charge to the client.

Conversely, if you did not provide adequate information to the tax pro and he/she prepared the return based on erroneous information provided by you, then he/she has EVERY RIGHT to charge extra to fix the problem, because the error was NOT due to his/her shoddy work, but rather to the fact that you did not provide relevant information.

Getting clients to see the difference CAN be rather challenging at times.
