    Strange Noise From Thermostat Box
Hi there, I have electric heat in my suite and I never turn on the heater / thermostat in my bedroom as I like to sleep where it is cool. So I have lived in my rented suite for 4 years, never turning the heat on in the bedroom. I was awakened by strange noise at 3:00am this morning, it was a loud crackling noise coming from the thermostat on the wall (old dial up), it sounded like bacon cooking. The dial was - of course - in the "off" position but the noise was loud and all my cats were staring at it. I tuned it on full blast and all the crackling noise stopped so I turned it back off and then the crackling noise started again. I repeated by turning the dial full blast on, leaving it for a minute, then turned it off again and this stopped the crackling noise. I felt the wall and it was cool to touch but I don't understand why this noise occurred in the wall behind the thermostat control when the heat was in the "off" position - can anyone tell me what they think might be happening?

    Thank you.

Noise can be caused by many things. Since it is a electrical device I suggest you call for service to make sure all is OK.

I have pretty much the same situation going on in my own suite - the thermostat box is making a loud buzzing sound. I'm arranging to have it checked out but have two theories at the moment - first is that it may be caused be vibrations in the building as placing my hand firmly on the box silences the noise. Secondly, it may be an electrical issue, like hvac suggested above, as the sound is similar to what you get from a poorly installed light switch.
