You might not have permission to use the network resource
    Hi,

I have three computers hooked on a WIFI router all running windows XP Pro. Sp2. They all connect to the Internet fine.

One computer has allowed me access to it normally.

But the other Computer I can see it on the network but I cannot access it.

All I am getting is the message:
You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found". I have the sharing enabled and the NetBios over TCP/IP enabled.

Please advise how to solve this.

Are you able to ping the computer through the name and IP? I'm assuming you're trying to access the other computer though UNC path, do you get the user/pass window? Is this account a local account on the computer you're accessing? Make sure it has access by going to the "user accounts" on the Control Panel.

Hi, Thank you very much for your answer. Following are my answers to your questions.

[QUOTE=totempty]Are you able to ping the computer through the name and IP? NO

I'm assuming you're trying to access the other computer though UNC path, do you get the user/pass window? I don't understand what "UNC" is but I'm not getting a user/pass window.
Is this account a local account on the computer you're accessing? I'm trying to access it through workgroup using sharing

Make sure it has access by going to the "user accounts" on the Control Panel. On the other computer that I can access I don't have a user account and I can still access it.

    Please, help. Thanks

If you are not getting a ping response doublecheck the addressing settings on the network adapter, and then verify that any firewalls including Window's are configured to allow file and printer sharing or otherwise generally trust the address range your computers are using.

Thank you very much. All the computers belong to the same workgroup and have the same IP group.

I just don't know how to setup the firewall on XP. Can you please, help me on this?

    1. Login to computer using an administrative account.
    2. Select Start > Control Panel > Windows Firewall.
    3. Presumably it is set to 'On'. If not, you have another issue.
    4. Verify if the firewall is the source of your grief by simply turning it off on the 'General' tab temporarily and test your file sharing/ping.
    5. If pinging and file sharing then works, reenable the firewall, and click the 'Exceptions' tab.
    6. Verify 'File and Printer Sharing' is checked, and then click 'Edit'.
    7. For each port item listed, if it says 'Custom' as shown below, click 'Change Scope' and verify that the custom list matches your network configuration. The example shows my settings which are probably not appropriate for your situation.
