My friend in ghana is hoping to visit uk.she has priced visa and passport renewal @ £544
This seems an awfull lot,is this a scam? seems like it to me.

This sounds like a scam to me.

It's definitely a scam, there is a post at the top of the visas and passports section about this exact scam

I can only tell you in US funds, but it is far less than 100 dollars, you can get a rushed passport for about 100 dollars ( 3 days) without looking it up again ( there have been 100's of posts about that on here in the past) but a passport in 30 days was around 20 dollars.

The next thing of course is they will tell you they have to have so many hundred or thousand dollars in a bank account before they can leave, and of course they will withdraw and give you the money back as soon as they are here. Then normally they will have to bribe some government official.
They will come up with reasons for money as long as you keep sending it.

Yes this is a scam, if you go to the US embassy web site for Ghana 2/3 of that site is nothing but warnings about the scams

You said friend, a person you meet by email though some dating site??
