How Do I File when my wife doesn't have a SSN?
    Dear All,
I just recently got married and my wife is an international student(F1 visa), so she doesn't have a SSN yet. We have her permanent resident alien application in process but yet to get the SSN. Are we able to still file jointly or must I file as a single since she is not a citizen or permanent resident? Thank you for your help.

If you are a resident then you can file joint return as residents. Attach W7 (ITIN application) for your wife with your tax return.

Since you are married you cannot file as single. You must file as MFJ or MFS, and in both the cases you need ITIN.

You don't need to get an ITIN for your wife if you file married filing separately. You can simply put in "NRA" where the SSN would go.
