    Spouse's SSN #
Do I have to have my ex-spouses SSN on my return? We got divorced a few months ago (although we were married for the whole year of 2007). We obviously will be filing separately and he will not talk to me to give me the information. Can anyone help with this?

    Couple of suggestions:

    1. If you have a copy of a previous year's joint income tax return it should be on there. If you don't have a copy, you can request one from the IRS - see: Need a Copy of Your Tax Return Information?

    2. Talk to your divorce attorney - there may be a record of your ex's SS number among the various filings. Your attorney may also be able to get it by talking to your ex's attorney.

Even though your are sperated and filing as such, the federal wants the id # of both spouses.

Agreed; the IRS insists on getting both SSNs to make sure that each side files appropriately on their return.

Example: If one spouse itemizes, the other MUST itemize.

They also need to chech to make sure the both do not claim any children involved.
