Somewhere the hot wire from the breaker is not interconnecting to the outlets.Quote:

Or was there perhaps recently any work done in the ceiling (boxes for light fittings)?
Normally the hot wire from the breaker goes to the central ceiling box, and is distributed from there to the light switch(es) and wall sockets.
Success!

Remove one of the nonworking outlets. See if it is wired by just sticking the wire in the slots in the back. If so, remove and put under the screws. This type of wiring is know to fail because of poor connections after a period. The poor connection may be in a nonworking outlet or it may be in the last working outlet on that circuit.
I have one of those testers, didn't think it could show an open hot, unless it means if no lights, then open hot, as they don't use batteries, and the ground and neutral have no potential difference.
I would check 1 end of the 5 outlets, then the other end of the 5 outlets, Any lights or fans that don't work, will mean you also may need to check connections in switch or lightboxes as well, then there is the panel, check all neutrals, and voltage out of all breakers.
