    Federal tax returns - 2007
    Sir,

Could you please clarify the following to me immediately?

    1. I was under OPT till Oct. 2007 and since, then I have transitioned to H1-B. But, my passport / I-94 still indicates that I'm on F1 status since, I'm yet to get my H1-B visa stamped. Do I have to file 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ?

    2. Am I taxed on the bank interest since, I received 1099-INT?

    3. I have a laptop which I often use for work purpose, can I claim the expenses towards to this laptop? How do I claim them?

    4. I don't currently own a car and hence, won't be able to claim miles for my work commute. But, I do take the city bus to work and spend on the monthly pass. Can I claim these expenses. How could I claim them?

    5. I had lost a unused airline ticket during my relocation. Can I claim this under theft expenses?

Thank you and I would greatly appreciate your immediate assistance on the above.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Best regards

    Kaushik

    1. If you are single, you will file nonresident tax return.
    2. The part of bank interest you received during H1-B period is taxable.
    3. Even you work out that you use... % for job, you won't get any deduction since it is subject to 2% AGI limit.
    4. Commuting miles are not deductible.
    5. Yes, you can work out casualty and theft loss. It is subject to $100 deduction and 10% AGI limit. That is if you 10K of income, then you can deduct losses over $1100.
