Model, year, and engine information please? Does the vehicle have anti-theft system?

It may be due to a built in anti-theft device. If it has an anti-theft system built in there is a chip embedded into the key that sync's with a computer. If the 2 do not sync it will disable the spark and/or fuel. If that is the case then you need to purchase a computer and key together as they cannot match a key to an existing computer. They are pricey but I have been told there is a way to by-pass the system and use a regular key but I am not privy to the how, just know that it is possible with some rewiring.
