I had an endometrial polyp removed in Dec 05. I also had some small fibfoids but these were not removed as they were within the uterine muscle & my OBGYN said it was all right to leave them.

I had a very heavy period 2 weeks after surgery which was very heavy & had many blood clots. This went on non stop for 3 weeks until my doctor prescribed Yasmin contrapceptive pill for me. I started taking it immediately & my period stopped within 2 days but it has started again about 11 days after taking these contraceptive pills. It is heavy & there are blood clots again and I'm into my 4th day of this period already.

What is wrong with me? I've never had such heavy periods before.
Has anyone had this problem before & how did you get better?

Emy, the heavy bleeding is not normal. After removal of a polyp, women may notice a little spotting for a few days not heavy bleeding. Doctors will usually remove the polyps or the fibroids, but apparently your Gynecologist thought it was okay to leave the fibroids. I advise you make an appointment to see your doctor, tell him/her that you would like a check up to determine what's causing your symptom.

You need to make an urgent booking to see your doctor... You will get the answers your looking for there.

My period is getting lighter now. So hopefully will stop soon & that Yasmin will kick in. I have contacted my usual GP who said to give Yasmin a bit more time to work. If it is still bad, he will refer me back to my gynaecologist.

I am having similar problems to yours,
Heavy periods, with clots, lasting up to 10days,! This has gone on for over 6 months now, doctors think it's the change, have given no medication, and I am English living in Spain so much more difficult to explain my problem. Anyone with any answers I would appreciate it.

Yasmin seems to have solved more problem for the time being. I figured out what I did wrong. I took the inactive pills by mistake too soon & so my period started early. Wish my doctor or the pharmacist had explained it better to me as I thought that the pills in the green section were the inactive ones.
Anyway, back to your problem, I think you should probably have an ultrasound scan to rule out fibroids or polyps as these can cause excessive bleeding. You didn't say your age but I presume that the doctors think it is caused by the change are referring to menopause. I would still consider a pelvic ultrasound to rule out other causes. I'm glad I did.
My doctor thinks that my prolonged period could be caused by a lack of oestrogen which is needed to stop the period. The Yasmin contraceptive pill is providing me with the needed oestrogen to stop my period.
I guess it's all part of growing older. I'm 44 years old, not yet menopausal according to my doctor & gynaecologist.
Good luck with your problem. Insist on a referral to a specialist. It took a year before I was finally referred to one as my doctor thought it was just hormonal.

Many thanks for that advice, I am 46yrs old, and I have thought about fybroids and polyps myself, but will have to put up with it until I return to Ireland where I won't have the language problem. They didn't refer me for an ultra scan.

This won't help with the bleeding, but as for endometriosis and cysts - wife had severe endometriosis, adhesions... doubled up on the bathroom floor painful. Docs 1st said the pattern didn't fit cysts. Then ultrasound didn't see the cysts (was hidden). Then one doc said maybe it was mental.

Eventually had surgery for adhesions and guess what? There were cysts! Three months later pain was back. 3 docs say live on vicadin or get a hysterectomy.

Wife hears from friend who had similar problem about an acupuncturist who did wonders. After 4 treatments in 2 weeks my wife's pain is cut in half. Still bad, but no drugs. (prior to acupuncture I'd found pressure points on her feet that could also relieve the pain enough for her to get to sleep w/out drugs).

Treatments were scaled back to 1 a week, then month. Every few months was better than before, though she tended to have a painful relapse in the spring. She also worked with a massage therapist and found running or walking helped.

Her DO (not the acupuncturist) wrote a note stating the acupuncture was for a medical condition. This allows us to pay out of a flexible spending account. Herbs not covered. About $50 treatment, not counting herbs.

Long story short. Acupuncture got her off drugs in 2 weeks. Got her mostly pain free in months. After 2 years of treatment she became pregnant with our son, Daniel. Today she goes maybe once every 3 months or when she feels off balance.

I send her acupuncturist a thank you card every father's day for giving her the option that others couldn't and thanking them for my boy.

So... if you have adhesions/endometriosis/cysts you may wish to talk to an acupuncturist. It was a long road, and I had my doubts, but everything he said he could do for her, he has.

The heavy bleeding- also known as menorrhagia- is often caused by numerous things- fibroids being one of them. There are a few different treatments for this... some women use IUD's, the birth control pill can help, some women get hysterectomies, but there are also less invasive procedures such as endometrial ablation- However, if you are still looking to have children, this would not be such an option... If you want more information on the topic, just search for menorrhagia and treatments... this will give you a number of items to sift through. Also, I am looking at the treatment methods available for menorrhagia in Spain and Mexico. Might anyone know a doctor or specialist that I could speak with about this? Also, have any of your doctors recommended you to use endometrial ablation? Lastly, would any of you be willing to speak with me further on your experiences in Spain and menorrhagia?

I realize I'm answering this years late (I came across this thread via googling for something else).

Though I'm now past menopause, for the record, here's my real life past experience and it REALLY works.

In the past I'd get horrific bleeding, really painful, including terrible back pain.

All these symptoms and much more were triggered by my terribly bright fluorescent LCD monitor, but I didn't come to that realization till months after being on computer (ditto to terrible eye issues). Also, coffee, chocolate, citrus & raw onions hidden in foods were also irritants.

Anyway... BY A FLUKE I discovered that eating large amounts of Bing Cherries, as well as mixing pure black cherry concentrate into water (ditto re: raspberry concentrate, cherry/raspberry yogurts, & cherry/berry or raspberry teas)
... all these foods healed the bleeding, inflammation and any internal infections causing my twinges. BTW, note that cherries heals gout & arthritis too.

Other soothing foods were yogurts, mayonnaise, whole-eggs, yams, cabbage, mushrooms, beets, barley, buckwheat, mullein, marshmallow, fennel, oils (I personally find the yellow olive oil less irritating to me than the virgin), dark greens, lysine, creamy soups, barley grass powder, seaweed, molasses, agave syrup... and more...

I have start my periods today. The last one I had it was light and it was stopping and starting for long while. Now it it is heavy again and in the last two hour I have had to change a four times
