I would like to buy an Electrical Range (Oven) and an Electrical Dryer to send them over to Romania. In the Range book, it said single phase 120V/240V. Over there, there is 220V. Can I install them? What do I need to do to make them work? As I understand, here the appliances have two hot wires (120V+120V) and one neutral. How do I connect them because, I think, they have one hot wire 220V and one neutral? Please make me understand as a novice in this matter.

Don't think it is going to work. The heating elements might be OK, maybe a 1000 watt at 240 volts only being about 900 watts at 220. However, the drier motor, lights, and timer motors run on 120 volts. You have 4 wires on an American drier or range, hot, the other hot, neutral, and ground. Both the motors and lights, as well as the burners on lower settings need the neutral as well as the 120 volt hot.

Usually the voltage isn't the real problem. Transformers and adaptors can be used to adapt the voltage supply to what the device needs. The real problem with the electrical system over there is that it is 220 volts/50 hz. Most dryers that are built for sale in the US are built with motors that utilize our 240 volt/60 hz system. Motors that are designed to run on 60 hertz must be replaced with a motor designed to operate on 50 hertz. It would probably be more effective to discuss this matter with the manufacturer of your choice. I know Whirlpool has a site for Belguim, which is very close to Romania. Most manufacturers are world-wide by now, so it could be as easy as sending money, not the appliance.
