I would love to get a puppy and already have a dog at home but I work up to six hours a day. Before I go to work I am able to take it for a walk and I have a crate I can out toys a bed and water in. But I am still worried that six hours is to long. Is there anything else I can do? :confused: :confused:

I'd say six hours is much too long to expect a puppy to hold its pee. There is always the option of getting a person to come in and let it out. Taking it to a family member to doggy sit. There are also doggy day cares but you must make sure that all of his/her vaccinations have been given to prevent contracting from parvo etc...

Also you say that you can put toys a bed and water in the crate... what happens when he spills the water and shreds up the bed and you have to make sure the toys do not get torn up and pose a danger to a young puppy... for instance squeakers and such.

It is awesome that you are thinking about this rather than running out and getting one. There is so much to consider, would you get male or female, does your dog enjoy other dogs, is your dog up to dealing with the nipping and constant playing of puppy how old is your current dog?? There is much to consider when taking on another dog/puppy.

How about having a space with lots of newspaper which can be used as a toilet and only leaving chew toys in there with it? I would like to get a female and my other dog is male and does enjoy the company of other dogs however I will let them have time to themselves. I do have a relative who could pop in but couldn't expect her to do it everyday.

I work with a man and both of his dogs are paper trained they have the laundry room for that purpose... but they never potty outside. I suppose you could try it.
What type of dog were you considering?

A wee-chon (a westie mixed with a bichon frise).

I really don't know much about those dogs... although I do love westies. I am so glad that it is not a jack russell or some other high driven dog. Although all dogs do not fit in a box, you may get one that's a energetic nightmare... lets hope not. Hopefully you can view the parenst and see how they behave. Well watever you do Good Luck

You could have a nice friend come over in the middle of the day for your puppy to give it lunch and a toilet break however they can last 6 hours even though that seems harsh you could set a little run up always leave water
