Ask Me Help Desk - Outside AC unit

Hello. Last year I have purchased a house. AC was working just fine till last year but when I try to turn it on, it seems like they are refuse to work. Air of temp. from the vent does not go lower even I make them lower temp. So I start look around...

What I found was usually, when I turn AC on, outside unit fan start working but even when I turn the AC switch in the house ON, I hear outside unit "CLICK!" :confused: and when I turn switch off, unit say "CLICK!" :confused: and fan does not run... I have waited about 30min with switch on but still fan does not run. First, What is causing to make CLICK sound of turning on and off and fan does't work? And what do I need to take a look or How do I need to take a look?

I appreciate anyone's opining and help...

The click you hear is a relay and/or the compressor being activated.
As the fan runs when power is on, the problem seems to be with the compressor.
Just switch the AC on, switch it off after 5 minutes. After switch off feel with your hand if the compressor is hot.
If it is, your compressor most probably is faulty and has to be replaced.
If it is still cool, that is an indication that the problem may alternatively be in the power supply to your compressor. There is a temperature sensitive cut-out switch to prevent the compressor from overheating and burning out.
If you can't find any wiring problem you better get a professional to repair the AC, as you need special equipment and gases to do so.

Sounds like a bad relay switch to me not the compressor. Hire a professional in any event and have them do the repair versus you keep trying to diagnose the situation and coming up with more and more parts to replace thinking they are bad. Also you might want to call up your local electric company and inquire if they have any kind of "heating and cooling repair insurance" offered in your area. They do here at Ohio Edison in Ohio. You sign up for their program for about $10 a month for either heat or a/c repair or $20 for both per month. Wait 30 days for you plan to go into effect and then call them with a service problem and they will come out and repair your heat or a/c unit for free under the plan. I think it's a great idea considering they will pay up to I think about $1,300 per year in repairs. Not a bad idea to check it out before you go trying to diagnose and repair yourself. If they have this program, I am sure you can wait at least 30 days for your plan to kick in. I'd check it out.
