Im trying to change out a shut off valve on my toilet. All it does is turn, is this stripped? Or is some kind of compression valve?

Yes, it is a compression valve. Turn both nuts in opposite directions.

I think Amricca nailed it... Does your valve look anything like my pictures below?

If so, like Amricca suggested... hold the valve body with one wrench and loosen the chrome nut (turn nut clockwise) using a pair of pliers. Then replace with new shutoff. With any luck you can use the old compression nut/compression sleeve.

If we are on track here, you will need to purchase a (5/8" compression x 3/8" compression) angle (or straight) chrome plated shutoff. Also add a 3/8" compression x 12" braided closet riser and maybe a new chrome flange to finish (comes split plastic if lucky! ).

If we missed it...let us know more about that shutoff....there are many choices out there... ;)

Yea that was right on. Thanks for the help. I actually just tightened it up for tonight, since I bought the kind that screwed on. Leak has stopped for now..

Ok - I hope people still monitor these threads! I am trying to replace the shut off valve but the parts are stuck together - the base nut and the center piece will not turn independent of each other. I have tried 2 wrenches, wd40, liquid wrench is soaking on there but I don't have much faith. Any suggestions

What size pliers or crescent wrenches are you using? You may need larger tools (gives greater leverage) to get the job done!

Are you sure that it is a compression fitting and not soldered on? Some soldered fittings look like a compression fitting.

If not sure, check out post #3 in this thread to see what they look like... ;)
