How to train a puppy to walk with leash
    Hey everyone!

So I picked up a job walking dogs for a lady in the neighborhood that health-wise can't walk her two bigger dogs herself.
She rescued a German Shepard puppy. He is about 4-5 months old and has never been walked. Needless to say, it's next to impossible to get him to walk. He takes a few steps if I bribe him with a treat but then immediately sits down and won't budge. He is afraid of EVERYTHING... other dogs, cars, loud noises etc. Everything makes him jump and sit down and he always has his tail between his legs with I take him out.

I thought things were going better the other day. The morning walk was rough but he start doing better by the end and had his tail up and wagging, but would only go up and down this one street that had no cars or dogs... if I tried to get him to go any other way he would sit and pull against the leash.

Today seemed like we are back at square one. I have to carry him down the porch steps... he won't come on his own. Then he just sits and sits... maybe a few steps here and there but I couldn't even get 1/4 of a block.

I am going to try and take both dogs out later and see if that helps (the other one does great on a leash).

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

When you take him out take some treats that her really enjoys and give some to him every so often and tell him he's a good boy. This way he will see going for a walk as a good thing and will ascoiate with the yummy treats! Good luck :)

Taking him out with a buddy will help. Take treats or a squeaky toy that he enjoys. When he walks well, stop and praise and give him a treat. Herding breeds are very intelligent and are very emotionable/sensitive breeds although they may not seem like it. My collies did the same thing... they would be fine on the farm but taking them on a leash in public they absolutely hated...
