Kenmore Washer Fills, Agitator Starts and Stops
    Hi:

I have a 14 year old Kenmore top load washer. Today while doing a load, the washer filled as normal, but now the agitator starts for about 5 seconds then stops for about 4 minutes, this has been going on for about 2 hours now.

Is the washer toast? Is it something that can be repaired?

    Thanks!

Clearly something is not functioning properly.
When the agitator stops after 5 seconds, do you hear anything moving or humming?
Or even better : can you remove the rear and top covers (do not touch any electrical parts!! ) : once the drum SHOULD be running but does not, does the motor rotate?
If that is the case, the driving belt may be broken or slipping.
Another possibility : switch off the power and disconnect the power lead. Put the cable on the floor in front of you : safety first.
If necessary close the water tap and remove water hose to allow moving the washer for better access.
Now try to turn the drum by hand. If the belt is OK this will require some strength, but it must be possible. If not there is the possibility that something is blocking the drum. (Loose wires from bra's often cause that problem).
To remove something blocking the drum : open the water filter and see if something got stuck there between the water outlet and the drum.
    Success!
