Magicjack! (Best voip I have ever seen!)
People, save yourself some money and go buy one of these. They are the bomb. I thought they were to good to be true, but they really are great and for the price there is no better phone service than this. **** not sure if an advertisement or not, edited just in case ***** FC

Skype is free with no proprietary device to buy. And it's license has no crap like this:
    magicJack - Terms of Service

You also understand and agree that use of the magicJack device and Software will include advertisements and that these advertisements are necessary for the magicJack device to work and for the service to be free in the first year of the agreement (and subsequent licenses to be at minimal cost). Advertisements will be served through the magicPage™ Software. MagicPage™ Software attempts to serve local advertisements and classifieds using a completely automated process that enables us to effectively target dynamically changing content. Our computers may analyze the phone numbers you call in order to improve the relevance of the ads.

To make an absurd comment like that, there is noway you own one. I do and love it. I bet you can't run skype through you home phone lines and use it like a regular phone line can you? No need to answer. I know NOT! Go to the site and buy one and get the facts before spouting off next time. You can't beat this setup Magicjack has. It's the next big thing, Just watch!

Needkarma, does make a valid point here, but I suppose it depends to what extent you are relying on VoIP for your communications.
Skype and a number of other services can be used in exactly the same way without upfront costs or specialist hardware requirements.

I will admit that I don't know a lot about skype, but magicjack has been called the skype killer by many. I don't think you guys are understanding what this thing does. It works just like vonage would except for no monthly fee. It's the only phone I have in my house other than my cell phone. You should get educated on this device. You will not regret it, I promise!

P.S. You can actually take this device with you out of the country and make free calls back to the USA.

    Due diligence, here's a discussion forum about the service/hardware: magicjack.com users forum - dslreports.com

Not sure why it's being pimped here like the next greatest MLM.

First of all, I couldn't care less if you keep paying a phone bill every month or not, but I don't care to and I think there are plenty out there like me. I am just giving these people with issues with the service they have now an alternative, so if you don't like this idea or don't care to buy one, maybe you should just sit back and let people that care to save money do so.

"It's better to be thought a fool, than to open thy mouth and remove all doubt" I think this quote could apply here!

CowboyFan, I think you are reading way too much into our comments and getting rather heated.

All we are doing is pointing out other alternatives and some of the obvious failings of this device.
We welcome open discussion, but not at the expense of common courtesy.

There is no way you can point out a flaw that I'm not having since I am the only one in this disscussion that actually owns a Magicjack. If you would like to purchase one and then add your opinion then I would treat these comments with more respect. I am not upset in the least and have said before if you are happy paying monthly, please continue to do so, but I have had this device since last July and am extremely happy with it.

TO THOSE NOT HAPPY PAYING MONTHLY, THIS PRODUCT IS AND DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS IT WILL.

The only advice I am giving to the readers of this thread is to do their due diligence in researching this. A computer user should always do this for any software such as this that is always running, serves ads and requires a hardware device to be installed continuously for the device to function.

Can't blame you there, and yes your PC does have to be up and running, but when the PC goes into sleep mode it still works fine and I have always left mine on anyway with as little energy as it uses. Like I said before, this is an awesome little device and anyone will agree after saving between $500.00 and $1200.00 per year on a phone bill.

The only drawback I can even think of, is the fact that you can't have your number ported in yet, but the techs there tell me this is coming in the near future.

Cowboyfan, It "Appears?" to be a great thing, Time will tell, I Love things that work, and are a good Deal.
I think many here may be Older(like Myself), and feel If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. (Because of the Last 100 GREAT Deals?). Hope it works for you.

Two things bother me here. The first is your evangelical support for the service. You seem too entusiastic promoting something that you would appear to get something for.

The second thing, is the financial model for the company. Apparently they are relying on advertiser support to pay the bills. That model is a chancy one and has caused the downfall of many dot.coms.

So what happens in a year? If you don't lock in the $19.95 renewal and they raise their pricing, where are you? Or what happens if you invest and prepay for next year or further and they go bellyup? Not only do you lose the service, but you lose your phone number.

I'm not saying this isn't a good deal and should not be looked closely at, but its not all a bed of roses. If you look at that support forum, you will see not all users got it to work as well as you did.

Yes many companies in the early phone systems have come and gone. And sadly even some good ones get bought out and closed by competitors. But if something sounds too good, I am always careful

Since nothing is "free" someone or something is paying the bills.

By what everything I have read this product "Sucks". No support, no phone number to call. I read about a lot of dissatisfied customers.

Musicman, propaganda can make crap look good or quality stuff look bad. Who wrote what you heard. I would consider the source either way. Maybe check Consumer Reports.
Found a lot of customer comments, they could work for a competetor or could be Magic Jack PR people:

    Doesn't look good. Take Care
