    1040 or 1040NREZ
    Hello

I am an international student in F1 visa in US. Can I file 1040 instead of 1040NREZ? 1040 gives me more refunds than 1040NREZ. Please tell me if filing 1040 can create problems in future, when applying for H1 B visa or during Green card processing.

    Thanks

F1 student is exempt from residency for 5 years. Your income is not subject to FICA taxes. You can't file resident tax return.

To learn more about nonresident tax filing, read Your U.S. Tax Return: U.S. Tax Filing Requirements for Non-Residents

    Hi MukatA

Thanks for the quick reply. I filed my taxes through Turbotax and I did not realize it has filed 1040 instead of 1040NREZ. If I do not change it, will it cause problems for me in future, like when I file for H1-B visa or for Green card processing? If so, can you tell me the consequences too?

    Thanks

Yes, you must file amended tax return Form 1040X and properly done 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843. I don't know about visa consequences.
