I need to set up a network between three computers two are Networked through Ethernet, but I need to access the third over the internet. How do I set up the protocol? Two of the computer's run Windows XP
and the third is running OS X Panther. I need to connect to one of the XP computers with the Mac and networked PC. Will there be a cross platform issue?

Can you explain why you need to network them? There might be different alternatives depending on what you need to accomplish.

Really I need as much control over the computers on the network as posible. Mainly to accses the hard drives for file transfer. Although being able to see the desktop and manipulate it as if I was at the computer would be a plus, if its posible. Although... I can't lock up the computer because sombody will be using it.

I would suggest taking a look at Logmein.com or gotomypc.com. Both allow you to control a remote PC over the Internet. I'm not sure if they have MAC clients though. Another option might be PC Anywhere, I believe that has a MAC client.

Great Scott that's exactly what I was looking for. But say I just wanted to swap some files, and not use the paid service. How would I setup the remote FTP connection? Basically I need to know what ports to open and how to send the request to the other computers IP address. If that is how you do it.

What I do is e-mail the file to an address I can access from either computer and then download the files.

I believe could install NWLink IPX/SPX. It allow wins to communicate with netware and (mac?? ). I also hope you know many of the mac file format are different from wins, unless it is already converted.

Sounds a little strange to me ("i can't lock up the computer because sombody will be using it.")... If file xfer is your primary intent check out FTP - works like a champ. Hmmm, is that Skid Mark or Slick Mark?

Probably because the other side has client FTP and not server. Here's a few free ones:

You have to install and load an FTP server on your system. If you are using a router you may have to open a port on the system that is running the FTP server to allow access from outside.

How this is all done depends on the FTP server and router you are using.
