When the float pops up and shuts off the water there is a significent increase of water pressure in the pipe. This causes the pipe to vibrate and hit something. This is generally called water hammer. Installation of bumpers or shock absorbers will probably eliminate the noise. Can be installed anywhere along the pipe.
