My new hot water heater has 3/4" pipe connections, can i use a 3/4"pipe to 3/4" PEX brass adapter with an inline Pex 3/4" ball valve, or is there a reason I see some folks installing brass or bronze extensions? My pex manifold is less than 3 feet from the water heater and will use 3/4" pex line to the manifold.

Good question... you want to install copper pipe off any appliance that has possibility of overheating.

Here, you want to PRESOLDER 3/4" female adapters onto at least 18 inches of 3/4" copper pipe and install that onto the heater before transitioning over to PEX pipe (need to presolder the pex x copper adapter as well). They also sell a flexible copper pipe adapter to hook up heaters (see pic.)... home supply stores sell them... they have nuts that fit directly to the heater and then can transition to pex out of that (I don't use them, but I have all the soldering tools... you may not.. ;) ).

Anyway, there you go... stay at least 18 inches off heater, minimum.
