When water has been running (Like during a shower) and then shut off there is amoaning sound which last about a minute. Turning the water back on (Hot or Cold) will stop it until you cut it back off. What causes this?

How old is house?

Type of water pipes (galvanized, copper, etc.)?

Are you on city/town water or well system?

Does this happen when all fixtures are used?

What kind of water heating system do you have?

Most of the time that we hear questions like this we end up going into details about pipes being overly secured or improperly secured... or, that pipes are expanding/contracting and rubbing against wood... that kind of stuff. Most of the time we just have to tell you guys that if it isn't leaking and it is clearly not unsafe then you just need to live with such noises... you know? Plumbing in older homes especially... sometimes just makes noises... sorry, I am sure that is not what you wanted to hear... ;)

Anyway, answer my questions... We have a good group here that will put heads together and try to help. You never know... this could also be something that can be fixed by replacing a shut off, for example... or just securing a pipe in basement *cross fingers* Let us know... MARK

Do you have a pressure reducing valve on the main line into the house?

Chipmonks says he has a pressure reducing valve.

I say that's probably the source of the "moaning". Diaphragm is vibrating as it approaches the cut off pressure. Could be trash in the screen. Open valve and clean screen. Might get it to go away by adjusting pressure setting slightly.

Hey Harold.. you know I say:

He should try a quick turn of the regulator knob... if that doesn't help, then should definitely remove the screen... clean it... pulse the water shutoff on/off to further clear any debris in line.. and he should be good to go!
