Should I be scared to dispute some credit report items?
Here is the situation: I filed bankruptcy in December of 2004 and got it discharged in March of 2005.

I pulled my reports and some accounts are showing as open even though they were discharged.

Because I listed all of my debts in the bankruptcy there are some debts not in the credit reports. I am scared that if I try to correct the open accounts the credit reporting agencies will just add the accounts from my bankruptcy to the report.

Does anyone have any experience with disputing accounts that should be shown as discharged and in turn having MORE accounts show up in the reports?

Should I be worried? Or should I try to correct the accounts?

    Thanks for any advice!

Why should you be afraid of doing this? This is perfectly legal to do. Contact the debtors that have incorrect information. If necessary you might have to send them a copy of your bankruptcy discharge paper. They should have been notified of your bankruptcy if you had listed them as a debtor. They also should have received a copy of your discharge as well. If not, send them a copy and see if this entry is corrected or not.

Credit reporting companies do not "list" anything that is not given to them by the lender. And they don't remove it, unless they get a notice from the lender.

You write them and challenge this info, it can be listed and showed bankruptcy

Thanks for the advice! I had noticed items show up on my credit reports after the bankruptcy with a note stating "included in bankruptcy" so I figured they used my BK records as a source of information... but maybe the creditors simply forwarded my BK notice to the credit reporting agencies?
