Can the future mother in law wear white to our wedding if the bride is going to wear a cream color gown?

No. White is for the bride, even if she isn't wearing white, it's bad taste for anyone else to wear white to a wedding, especially the future mother in law.

Nobody should wear white (even if you are wearing ivory or champagne color). It's very rude and as the first poster said, bad taste.

Etiquette agrees with the two above posters (as do I), but in modern weddings it's really up to the bride. If the bride is comfortable with other people wearing white, cream, etc, then go for. But if she says so, or she hesitates, find something else!

I think it depends on the relationship you have with the bride. If it was my mother in law I wouldn't care less as long as she was there however if you don't get on to well or the relationship is strained it may seem like your trying to steal the brides day

The color of my mother-in-law's dress would not affect my wedding at all. She probably knows that white on a guest is considered inappropriate, but wants to play. Let her. She's human, and everyone knows who is getting married.

Marriage can be about traditions and appropriateness, or it can be about love. If she shows up at the wedding wearing white, give her a hug and thank her for coming.

I agree it would be up to the bride, but I would hope, that the Mother-in-law would have enough courtesy not to.

I was just married last June and my mother-in-law wore ivory even though I did as the bride. (Honestly, it did look a little strange in the photos ~ turns out she also did it when her other son married 10 years ago)

Ask the bride nicely if she minds. She doesn't get to dictate what you wear but that color is a touchy subject and its best to let it slide if she doesn't approve.
