My gas water heater makes a crackling sound when the fire is on. It is about 8 years old with a power vent. Any ideas?

Sounds like it has a lime cake or other debris that has accumulated on the bottom inside the water heater. You are supposed to flush the Water Heater every few months or so but most people so not. You can try to flush it now but that could be difficult.
