I have a 9 week old poo-tzu, lstnight he woke up to go to the bathroom more than usual. This morning I noticed his poop was kind of runny, and looked like there may be some blood in it. Anyone know why this could be happening?? :confused:

Whatever it is isn't good. He needs to see a vet. It may even be worth finding one over the weekend. This is the very dark tarry real blood, and not just red from something he ate?

Some of the big pets stores have vets, but I don't know if they keep Saturday hours.

I would take your dog to the Emergency Vet asap- every major city has one and they are open all night just like a regular ER. My first dog had bloody stool, my mom got the dog to Vet right away, turned out the dog had Parvo(sp?) and would have died if we had not gotten the puppy there as soon as we did.

I don't think bloody stool is a typical symptom of parvo. Parvo doesn't care, it just kills puppies.

I agree with the others about seeing a Vet as soon as possible. It could be an infection, hopefully nothing too serious.
But, again, a Vet needs to see him, right away.

Parvo attacks the intestinal linings in puppies, causing diarrhea with blood in it, in advanced stages.

There is a difference between blood in the stool and bloody diarrhea. The typical symptoms of parvo is a foul diarrhea and lethargy. Time is of the essence in dealing with parvo. The sooner the vet gets the puppy on an IV, the more likely it is to live.

Parvovirus

Parvovirus is a viral disease of dogs. It affects puppies much more frequently than it affects adult dogs. The virus likes to grow in rapidly dividing cells. The intestinal lining has the biggest concentration of rapidly dividing cells in a puppy's body. The virus attacks and kills these cells, causing diarrhea (often bloody), depression and suppression of white blood cells -- which come from another group of rapidly dividing cells. In very young puppies it can infect the heart muscle and lead to "sudden" death. This is a very serious disease. Some puppies infected with parvovirus will die despite prompt and adequate treatment. While no extremely accurate statistics are available, a good guess is probably that 80% of puppies treated for parvovirus will live. Without treatment, probably 80% or more of the infected puppies would die.

Due to the high death rate, parvovirus gets a lot of free publicity. Many people just assume that any case of diarrhea in a dog is from parvovirus. This is not true. There are a lot of other diseases and disorders that lead to diarrhea. If you have a puppy, don't take any chances. Have your puppy examined by your vet if diarrhea is a factor in any disease. It is better to be safe than to be sorry.

I had the same problem and I looked online and saw no real good answer for this I just returned from the vet.

My dog has Coccidosis... it's a simple parasite/ bug nothing serious... people said Provo and I *&^& my pants... if your dog has Provo there "poop" would be almost all blood and come out like squeezing a ketchup bottle!
