Can shower door be hinged to glass panel without a header?
We've been getting estimates on a shower door enclosure and are getting all sorts of different opinions regarding our configuration. It will be an L-shaped enclosure with a 33in panel on the short end of the L, and a door hinged to a glass panel on the other. (The door cannot hinge to the wall, because the toilet is right next to the shower.) Some are telling me we HAVE to go with a header. Two people have said they can use 1/2" glass panels and a 3/8" door, and keep it completely frameless. Is this safe and durable? We would prefer to go frameless, but not at all costs (we want it to last and not fall on us, of course). Some shower guys have said they've never heard of installing that way and seem to think its ludicrous. Please advise. Thanks!

Yes,. glass can be hinged to glass panel without header. I will always vote for glass door with header... just seems stronger to me. BUT if creative, and company installing is reputable... I am sure you will be fine.

I am confident that a door without header would never fall on you... ;) But it may shift/drift over time as metal (hinges) fatigue/tilt over time and can lead to misalignment issues with door closing.

Check out this pic... more examples available by typing in frameless glass shower door at any image date base online.

AOL Image Search results for "frameless glass shower door"

Let us know your thoughts... Mark

A lot of guys doing installation only have their previous knowledge to rely on, no such things as shower door college. If they have never seen one they probably think it doesn't exist. Mark showed me several things this week that I never knew existed, its like fricking magic, they do exist, thanks MASSPLUMBER.
