    Replacing a light fixture
I just remodeled my bathroom and bought a new light fixture. When I hook it up direct to the breaker it works fine. When I hook up the light switch, it trips the breaker. I changed the light switch and the wire, but it still trips the breaker. The only other appliance on that breaker is my water pump.

    It is wired wrong.

Can you elaborate a bit as to what you did. The information given is a bit sparse.

    Hoxie,

You are not making any sense. Why would you hook your light up to the breaker, does it have a pull switch on it?

When you opened the overhead outlet, What wires did you find?

A Black/White & bare ground from the Breaker Black carrying 120 +/- VAC?
A Black/White pair with the White wrapped with either black or red tape?

Do you have a wall switch?

Normally, I would expect to find a feeder pair and a switch loop pair. First, open the circuit breaker that feeds the ceiling wires. You then connect the black from the feeder to the black going to the switch. The white from the switch (with black or red tape) on the insulation to the black from the light switch. The White from the fixture is connected to the White from the supply. Any bare or green wires are connected together.

    I'll take a guess.

There is a switch loop. He wired everything color for color, meaning black to black, white to white. Now every time the switch gets turned on the breaker trips.

    Anyone agree?

    Stan,

I believe you and I are saying the same thing. I could not post an agreement in your favor until I spread some more agreement's around.

Don, I appreciate it, but don't bother with the agree/disagree, green/red thing.
I don't put too much stock in that at all. It's just a feel good popularity contest.
