    Dog Ate Chocolate
I have a 3 1/2 yr old dog, weighs about 11 lbs... woke up yesterday morning to discover that he had eaten about 2 oz of dark chocolate that my partner accidentally left within his reach. Not sure what time he ate it, if it was overnight or in the AM- woke up around 9a to find the empty wrapper. Looks like he vomitted, but ate it- all that I found was a stain on the rug.

He was acting crazy all day yesterday- like a little kid on a major sugar rush- just kept running and jumping and asking to go out... we put him in his crate with his dog bed to keep him still at the recommendation of the ER clinic, so that his heart rate didn't get even higher from all the activity... fed him some ice cubes... he was eating and drinking normally, but he definitely wasn't himself. By about 8:30/9p last night he started winding down, and fell asleep... and seems perfectly fine today, just like himself.

Just wondering if there's anything else I should be watching for, and if it's still possible that he could get very ill/die from eating it? He seems fine today, breathing, heartbeat and energy level all seem normal- but I guess I'm just looking for (and hoping for) some reassurance.

    Thanks.

Especially if he's OK now, you should be fine. Theobromine (the toxic chemical in chocolate, for dogs anyways) has a relatively high lethal dose, 150 or more mL/kg... Still, since he's so small, it wouldn't take much more, and the same size dose of say, baking chocolate would almost certainly kill him, so be careful in the future

I agree. If he's fine now, odds are he'll be okay.

Dogs are very different. We had a Pomeranian who, last year, ate an entire box of truffles. He threw them up and half an hour later, he was running around a playing.
