My husband and I own a home and pay mortgage in Nebraska. He plays minor league baseball so he lives away from home from March through September. Last year, he lived and paid rent in Memphis, TN, West Palm Beach, FL, and Springfield, MO while I stay in Nebraska. He is salaried, but does not get any reimbursement or per diem for rent paid from his employer. Can we claim any tax refunds on his rent paid?

He can claim his daily living expenses using the per diem rates in IRS Pub 1542 or his actual expenses, whichever is more advantageous.

He would file Form 2106 and the resulting deduction would be an itemized deduction. There MAY be some Alternative Minimum Tax limitations.
