My wife and I have a upstairs guest bathroom that has had a sewage smell. We tried some of the fixes, but to no avail. Then we called a plumber, and they found that the vent pipe in the attic was not properly secured, and was actually leaking odor to the HVAC in the attic. It has been more than a day, and I can still smell the fumes although not as strong. I went up to the attic to check it, and I can see the repair that the plumbers made, but I can still smell it in the attic?

Any ideas?

It will most likely take a while to get it all out, you might want to spray like some lysol through your return vent so it pulls it through the house...

Yup... sewer gas is strong odor as you know all too well at this point... spray lysol like YCS48 suggested.. should go away next day or so. If it doesn't get back to us... repair may not have taken (BUT I DOUBT THAT.. ;) ) Good luck!! Mark

The smell is stronger this morning that it was last night. I did spray some lysol in the vent. I have gone back up to the attic, and checked the coupling that the plumber put on, and I can't find anything that looks loose on the vent pipe. I have tried to run the ac and fan to try and circulate fresh air to no avail.

Any other ideas?

Only thing left if odor is restricted to the attic is call the plumber back and ask him to investigate further... smell should have gone away by now.

And the odor does not show up in bathroom downstairs... right? If it did you could have a fixture trap that has dried out from disuse... you did say it was a guest bath.. yes?

Anyway, check the sewer traps at bathroom, if water in all, then need to call the plumber back and see what he thinks... let us know... Mark
