Both of the toilet tanks in my house stopped filling with water this morning. The water pressure from my faucets is fine, and since it's both, it wouldn't appear to be a problem with the toilet hardware, so I'm at a loss as to what it could be. Any ideas?

Questions:

Are the two toilets installed back to back?

Are the two toilets on the same floor?

Are any other faucets involved (I know you said faucets OK.. I am wondering about your shower valves)?

Any construction work going on in your area at the streets?

Is it possible that they just purged/worked on fire hydrants in your neighborhood? Sometimes sediment gets kicked up when this happens and can clog the toilet fill valves.

That is the point here, by the way. I figure you need to shut off water supply to toilets and check the fill valves for sediment. Fill valves can plug up pretty easily. You need to start here... or at the valves under toilet... OR at common cold pipe that picks both up (guessing now). As I don't know answers I am assuming a lot here.

Which type fill valve do you have.. (see pics.) Let us know.. we can talk you through disassembling if you want and steps to clear water line of any sediment IF PRESENT AT ALL! Get back to us with answers! Talk soon... Mark

Between the time I posted and the time I got back to read the answer, the problem seems to have resolved itself, though why the problem went away is as mysterious as why it showed up. Since I don't know what caused this, I can't know if it will return, so I will try to answer your questions, anyway, so that if there is some hidden problem I need to address, you might help me discover it.

The first diagram is the type of mechanism I have.

The bathrooms are on opposite sides of the house, so share no common wall. One of the toilets is not even on the same wall as the other bathroom fixtures in that room (shower, bath, sink). This would lead me to think that the pipes bringing the water to the toilets are run separately from the main, but that seems confusing to me given the problem observed.

I did not test the bath or shower fixtures, only the sinks, so can't answer your question.

I live in a somewhat new town, where many new houses are constantly under construction, though none are particularly close to my home.

I am unaware of any work being done on local fire hydrants, and have not seen any work on neighboring streets.
